05-30-12 – Groupon Father’s Day Email?

Celebrate the man who gave birth to you...

A co-worker forwarded this email from Groupon to me. At first it seemed Groupon, had just re-used edit from a Mother’s Day promo and replaced all of the pronouns. But if you look at the picture of the man in the promo, you’ll see he is holding his belly and looks pregnant. What a bizarre promo email from Groupon.

Besides being utterly confusing, what was Groupon thinking? Was it some sort of joke, that maybe my co-worker and I missed? Is it a tongue in check sort of deal? Can anyone explain this to me? Am I missing something that is so plainly obvious, that this would make sense for a Father’s day ad campaign?

  1. It’s an MPREG (male pregnancy) joke. The accompanying image of the pregnant man in the mirror reinforces it. At first (when I got the email) I thought it was a marketing goof, but when I went to the site I realized it’s a purposeful joke. Good job, Groupon, good job.

    • Agreed Kimberly, took me a while too. But from the traffic Google is sending for searches of ‘Groupon Father’s Day’, I don’t think I was the only one who thought it was bizarre. Although, from a marketing perspective, they definitely got some attention. So, kudos to Groupon for such a bizarre campaign that seems to be working and getting people to check out their product and site!

  2. I got the same email, but it had a different graphic header — a grandfather, father and son. Not the pregnant guy. So if they were trying to be amusing, it lost its meaning when the corresponding graphic wasn’t included.
