08-18-12 PSY

It’s been awhile since I’ve updated the site, so I think I’ll leave this right here…

Psy – Gangnam Style

Psy’s video for Gangnam Style is pretty much incredible. The last big Korean ‘KPOP” export that I can recall was the Wonder Girls back in 2008, with this So Hot. Luckily, ‘Gangnam Style’ is very different. Tell me what you think in the comments below!

UPDATE: Appears this ‘Gangnam Style’ has gone viral with many remixes, mashups, and redo’s popping up everywhere. Psy has even become somewhat of a celebrity here in the US. Send me links of all the videos you find that remix, mashup or re-do ‘Gangnam Style’ and I’ll post them here!

05-27-12 Loooooong Weekend!

We plan to spend most of this weekend at Galveston, on the beach. Cold Beer. Fishing rod. Grilling burgers. Music blaring. No one in sight.

That’s what is nice about Texas, there are a ton of people here, but the state is truly massive. So even on Memorial Day weekend, when you go to the beach, there is still plenty of room. My (our) favorite spot is south of Galveston, in Brazoria county. Right past the San Luis Pass, heading into what the map calls ‘Christmas Tree Bay’. You just turn left right onto the beach, literally, just turn left, drive on the sand and then park wherever you want.

You could never do that up north. Going to the beach in Delaware or Maryland is sort of a hassle. First, there are too many people and too little beach. So it’s crowded, and parking is a hassle. Once you do get parked, it’s normally blocks from the beach, so you have to walk all of your shit to the beach.

If you’ve forgotten something, well you better not forget anything. It’s too much of a hassle to get back to the car or house.. Then once you actually get to the beach, you have to find a spot to put everything. If you get there early, you’re fine for a bit. Fine, until a group of forty people set up right next to you and decide they want to play beach football across all of your stuff..

In Texas, and specifically Galveston, it’s not like that. There are probably hundreds of miles of coast here. The water is almost always warm, because it’s the gulf (something that can only be said maybe in late August for the Atlantic). Next, if get away from Galveston proper, where all the tourists like to be on top of each other (presumably because they don’t know better) by driving south, the beach is wide open. We actually drive 20+ miles south to get to our secret spot.

It’s worth the extra few miles too. Not only is the drive beautiful (the Texas Gulf Coast truly is beautiful), but you get to see all of these amazing beach houses built on stilts. Just imagine what those houses have been through – it seems every ten-twenty years Galveston Island is swallowed by the Gulf, only to be spit back up. Want to burn a fire or grill at the beach, go for it. Want to drink on the beach, no worries. Want to camp and stay the nights, absolutely.

Being a native Marylander, it was tough to start admitting this, but Texas truly is awesome. Texans don’t just do the beach right, they do Memorial day right too. I mean most states have flags and banners out. Other places BBQ and remember what the day is all about, sort of. Texans go all out. I mean there are already American flags everywhere here. Just a normal day in Texas would probably trump the patriotism shown in many other parts of the country. But for these big remembrance days, there are flags everywhere.

And it’s not just a few flags, on my way home to work they had flags set out every few feet on everything on my way home, for close to several miles. Then every town around has some parade where local veterans march. Then there are fireworks, and community barbeques, and just about everything you can imagine, but bigger (this IS Texas).

Anyways, lets stop my diatribe, here are the tracks. Also, don’t forget to thank a veteran. And if your military service member didn’t make it back, remember them in a way they would have wanted. Happy Memorial day!

01-21-12 Klaypex’s ‘Feel Alright’

Found Klaypex’s ‘Feel Alright’ on Hype Machine earlier today. I had jumped on the computer this morning to balance my checkbook, and had Hype Machine just play songs in rotation in the background. At first I didn’t realize that this song wasn’t just a regular Daft Punk song. As ‘Feel Alright’ progressed, I got to hear what Klaypex had added to the song. The muted lyrics, the sped up tempo, the boosted synth and altered bass. Klaypex has done a wonderful job keeping the ‘Daft Punk’ sound, but making it dancier. Making the song more, more… more ‘Daft Punk’? Just listen to ‘Feel Alright’ below and you’ll see what I mean.

01-16-12 Is Your College Sweatshirt Ironic?

Yesterday we were out running errands and we were going by Fry’s and so I wanted to swing by and look at external DVD/Blu-Ray drives. We ended up just buying a low-tech DVD drive for $30, and passed on dropping a few hundred on a Blu-Ray read/write drive. We figured it wasn’t anything we needed (we don’t own a single Blu-ray, how 2008 of us, right?). We also bought some game that looked like it was going to be redo on Sim City, but ended up being a giant time-suck bullshit timer/task game. The Amazon reviews even compared it to Sim City, and they were lying.

Anyways, on our way out of Fry’s we handed our receipt to that guy that checks to make sure we’re not criminals at all electronics stores. I’m not sure what his job actually is called, Thief Deterer? No idea. Anyways, this guy happened to be a young black guy, maybe 19-20 years old. I hand him the receipt and he’s smiling at me and says ‘Your sweatshirt is awesome’ and I look down at my sweatshirt to figure out he’s talking about.

I’m wearing my regular Hood College hoodie sweatshirt I’ve had for six or seven years. Nothing awesome about it all. Anyways, I begin to pick up on why this guy thinks it’s awesome. This guy is thinking my Hood sweatshirt is like ‘Da Hood’ College, like my college sweatshirt is ironic… It quickly gets awkward as I try to explain to him, it’s a real sweatshirt from a real college where I got my real college degree. He laughs unsure about if bullshitting him. I wasn’t.

We walk away.

Awesome, Lesleh and I paid a fortune to go to a small liberal arts college.

Where we had the ‘Hood Hello’ (a simple wave to EVERYONE you pass, even if you hate them) or the Pergola Party (where we had a campus-wide shaving creme battle). Where, when you needed help with registering classes or paying your tuition, the person behind the counter knew your first name and you knew THEIR first name. Where our class sizes were measured in the tens of people (I had advanced classes with only eight other people, my largest class had 33 people in it). Nothing more wholesome then paying a hundred thousand dollars for a solid education where I didn’t have any ‘fluff’ classes.

Instead, people think I went to ironic college. Believe me, if I graduated with a ironic degree I’d be a lot funnier..

Now, these guys, The Hood Internet, their name is probably ironic.

01-15-12 Quick Post

Quick post. Didn’t get a chance to get something up earlier. Had a busy day, well not really more of a ‘movie day’. Just watched The Hangover 2 and The Change Up. I have to say both were pretty funny. The Hangover 2 seemed to mirror the plot of the first Hangover, but it was pretty funny. However, the movie Lesleh picked, The Change Up, was actually really funny. Plus you see Olivia Wilde and Leslie Mann’s boobies. Which made it better… Some fun stuff I found on web below. I’ll try to get caught back up tomorrow.

restart page– I love the Apple startup from the early 90’s. Reminds me of when I was a kid.

P.S. Who knew Olivia Wilde was actually born as ‘Olivia Cockburn’, I’d change my name too.. Source(This isn’t college so I cite wikipedia, OK?).
