01-06-12 – Artopia 2012 Is Coming Up!

We’ve got just a few more weeks to the Houston Press’s Artopia 2012. Last year’s Artopia was my first event, and I posted links to the posts I made about it in 2011 below. Artopia is truly an amazing event that happens every year in Houston, and this is the third or fourth year. Artopia has quickly become a Houston staple for the local arts and music lover!

Artopia sold out last year, so getting tickets early guarantees you’ll get in (no tickets were sold at the door last year). The event includes live performance arts, food and drinks (alcohol if you buy VIP tickets, I think). It’s on a Saturday night, so no excuse on why you can’t make it!

Here’s the link to the Artopia main site. Also, if you use promo code ‘ArtopiaGB’when purchasing tickets here you’ll get $15 off the regular ticket price of $45. That’s 33% off just because you cruised on by DowntroddenInDC, you’re welcome.

Hope to see you all there, and I’ll continue to update about Artopia 2012 as it gets closer!

01-05-12 DowntroddenInDC is on Facebook!

I hate Facebook, but many people seem to love the site. So, we’ve added a new site for users to interact with the content put up on here, but on Facebook! Yay, 2012 and I finally give in. I mean if you love giving away copious amounts of personal information and love to give up the copy-right on your photos to Mr. Zuckerberg, why not go a step further and send some likes my way?. So, if you’re on Facebook (which you no doubt are), show DowntroddenInDC some love and like us on Facebook! Link below!

2-9-11 – Verizon iPhone not really a big deal

I guess all the freakout about the iPhone going to Verizon was way over blown. Today is the first day you can buy the new iPhone on Verizon, and from the articles below, it seems it wasn’t all of that big of a deal. There doesn’t seem to be any pent up demand for the phone.

I know a few people who wanted to get the phone from Verizon, and it doesn’t look like they’ll have to wait long either at The Apple Store or at Verizon. I also know a few others who are waiting for their Verizon contracts to expire to jump over to ATT.

I, myself, have ATT and an iPhone and haven’t experienced any of the issues many New Yorkers and San Franciscans have had. It always works, I have dropped calls but no worse than what I remembered with Verizon. The biggest difference I saw when I went from Verizon to ATT, is my bill being lower. I had a few hiccups with the iPhone 3Gs, but Apple resolved them quickly. When I did have issues with my old phone (an LG Chocolate) at Verizon, they made me carry insurance at $8 a month and then pay Verizon $50 for any phone replacement/warranty issues. That’s what pushed me to ATT.

Now I have an awesome phone that does everything I need it to do (and more). I pay less money and ATT and Apple both treat me like a valued customer. I had been with Verizon for nearly 7 years and their customer service was getting increasingly hostile (they’re nearly as bad as Comcast…)

Good luck to all of you who made the switch. I’m sure we’ll see you back on ATT soon!

Also, this commercial now seems a bit ironic…

2-8-11 – David Sedaris is coming to town!

David Sedaris

David Sedaris

Pretty exciting news! David Sedaris is coming to town! I’ve seen him read passages twice in the past. Once at the Meyerhoff in Baltimore, reading out of ‘Me Talk Pretty One Day’ and another at the Weinberg in Frederick (Md) reading out of ‘When You Are Engulfed In Flames’. I actually got Sedaris to sign a few books at this reading and got to chat with him for a few moments. A very funny guy!

Sedaris’s second reading was especially relevant, because ‘When You Are Engulfed in Flames’ talks about his trying to quit smoking while living in Japan (among many other things). We had just gotten back from a trip to Japan several months earlier, so I was completely able to relate to some of the quirky things the Japanese do.

His newest book, Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk, is just alright. I got a signed copy from my dad for Christmas, and it’s completely on par with other Sedaris books just fiction. It’s a collection of short stories that are written in fable form. Interesting, but I felt it didn’t go deep enough into the stories and the whole book itself took me less than forty minutes to read. I wanted more, but worth checking out.

Anyways, Houston’s Society for Performing Arts has him coming Tuesday April 19, 2011 to Jesse Jone’s Hall. Tickets range from $24 to $59, which are quite reasonable. Both times I saw him before, tickets were in the 30’s-40’s. It seems Society for the Performing Arts will be about the same size as the Meyerhoff in Maryland, so you’ll be able to choose sections of seats, etc.

Get your David Sedaris Tickets here!

Hope to see you all there!

I have enclosed David Sedaris’s books (no particular order) below for those who are not yet familiar with him:

So, as you can see I never got around to posting more mp3’s. I think I fixed the problem though, so they’ll be coming as I have time. It’s the end of the month today and work is very busy. Hope to get some more media on here this evening.

Also, if you haven’t already checked it out, see today’s Deal of the Day (from the Houston Press). Not really my thing (not one for manicure’s), but may be a nice thing to get for a special lady for Valentine’s or for her to look pretty for that special night.
